"What are the Kalidahs?" asked the girl.
"They are monstrous beasts with bodies like bears and heads like tigers (это чудовищные звери с туловищами, как у медведей, и головами, как у тигров)," replied the Lion, "and with claws so long and sharp (и когтями такими длинными и острыми) that they could tear me in two as easily as I could kill Toto (что они могут разорвать меня на /две/ части так же легко, как я мог бы убить Тото). I'm terribly afraid of the Kalidahs (я ужасно боюсь Калидов)."
"They must be dreadful beasts (они, должно быть, ужасные звери)."
The Lion was about to reply (Лев собирался было ответить) when suddenly they came to another gulf across the road (как неожиданно они подошли к другой пропасти, /идущей/ через дорогу; gulf — морской залив; бездна, пропасть). But this one was so broad and deep (но эта /пропасть/ была столь широкой и глубокой) that the Lion knew at once he could not leap across it (что Лев сразу же понял, что он не сможет перепрыгнуть через нее).

"I'm not surprised that you are," returned Dorothy.
"They must be dreadful beasts." The Lion was about to reply when suddenly they came to another gulf across the road. But this one was so broad and deep that the Lion knew at once he could not leap across it.
So they sat down to consider what they should do (поэтому они присели подумать, что же им делать), and after serious thought the Scarecrow said (и, после серьезных размышлений, Страшила сказал): "Here is a great tree, standing close to the ditch (вот огромное дерево, что стоит рядом с канавой). If the Tin Woodman can chop it down (если Железный Дровосек сможет срубить его), so that it will fall to the other side (так, чтобы оно упало на другую сторону /пропасти/), we can walk across it easily (то мы сможем легко перейти через нее)."
"That is a first-rate idea (это первоклассная мысль)," said the Lion. "One would almost suspect you had brains in your head, instead of straw (можно почти что заподозрить, что у тебя в голове есть мозги, а не солома: «вместо соломы»; to suspect — подозревать; думать, полагать, предполагать)."
The Woodman set to work at once (Дровосек немедленно приступил к работе), and so sharp was his axe that the tree was soon chopped nearly through (и его топор был столь острым, что вскоре дерево было почти полностью срублено; through — насквозь; совершенно). Then the Lion put his strong front legs against the tree and pushed with all his might (затем Лев опер свои сильные передние лапы о дерево и толкнул /его/ изо всех сил; might — энергия; мощность, физическая сила), and slowly the big tree tipped and fell with a crash across the ditch (и медленно огромное дерево наклонилось и упало с грохотом через канаву; tip — наклон, наклонное положение; to tip — наклонять, склонять), with its top branches on the other side (/упав/ верхними ветвями на другую сторону /канавы/).

So they sat down to consider what they should do, and after serious thought the Scarecrow said: "Here is a great tree, standing close to the ditch. If the Tin Woodman can chop it down, so that it will fall to the other side, we can walk across it easily."
"That is a first-rate idea," said the Lion. "One would almost suspect you had brains in your head, instead of straw." The Woodman set to work at once, and so sharp was his axe that the tree was soon chopped nearly through. Then the Lion put his strong front legs against the tree and pushed with all his might, and slowly the big tree tipped and fell with a crash across the ditch, with its top branches on the other side.
They had just started to cross this queer bridge (только они начали переходить по этому странному мосту) when a sharp growl made them all look up (как зычный рык заставил их всех поднять взор), and to their horror they saw running toward them two great beasts (и к своему ужасу они увидели, как два огромных зверя бегут к ним) with bodies like bears and heads like tigers (и туловища у них были, как у медведей, а головы, как у тигров).
"They are the Kalidahs (это Калиды)!" said the Cowardly Lion, beginning to tremble (сказал Трусливый Лев, начиная дрожать).
"Quick (быстро)!" cried the Scarecrow (закричал Страшила). "Let us cross over (давайте перейдем /по мосту/)."
So Dorothy went first, holding Toto in her arms (и вот Дороти пошла первой, держа Тото на руках), the Tin Woodman followed (за ними следовал Железный Дровосек), and the Scarecrow came next (и следующим пошел Страшила). The Lion, although he was certainly afraid, turned to face the Kalidahs (а Лев, хотя он, конечно, был испуган, повернулся, чтобы встретиться лицом к лицу с Калидами), and then he gave so loud and terrible a roar that Dorothy screamed (и затем он издал такой громкий и ужасающий рев, что Дороти завизжала) and the Scarecrow fell over backward (а Страшила упал навзничь), while even the fierce beasts stopped short and looked at him in surprise (тогда как даже лютые звери резко остановились и с удивлением уставились на него).

"Quick!" cried the Scarecrow. "Let us cross over." So Dorothy went first, holding Toto in her arms, the Tin Woodman followed, and the Scarecrow came next. The Lion, although he was certainly afraid, turned to face the Kalidahs, and then he gave so loud and terrible a roar that Dorothy screamed and the Scarecrow fell over backward, while even the fierce beasts stopped short and looked at him in surprise.

But stand close behind me (однако стойте близко за мной = спрячьтесь за мою спину), and I will fight them as long as I am alive (и я буду сражаться с ними, пока я жив = насмерть; as long as — пока; до тех пор, пока)."
"Wait a minute (подожди минуту)!" called the Scarecrow (закричал Страшила). He had been thinking what was best to be done (он раздумывал, что же лучше сделать), and now he asked the Woodman to chop away the end of the tree that rested on their side of the ditch (и теперь он попросил Дровосека отрубить тот конец дерева, который лежал на их стороне канавы; to rest — отдыхать, давать отдых; опираться /на что-либо/, покоиться /на чем-либо/).

But, seeing they were bigger than the Lion, and remembering that there were two of them and only one of him, the Kalidahs again rushed forward, and the Lion crossed over the tree and turned to see what they would do next. Without stopping an instant the fierce beasts also began to cross the tree.

"Well," said the Cowardly Lion, drawing a long breath of relief (делая глубокий вдох облегчения = облегченно вздыхая; breath — дыхание; вздох; to draw breath — вздохнуть), "I see we are going to live a little while longer (я вижу, что мы поживем еще немного подольше), and I am glad of it (и я рад этому), for it must be a very uncomfortable thing not to be alive (потому что это, должно быть, очень неприятно быть неживым: «это очень неудобная вещь не быть живым»). Those creatures frightened me so badly (те твари столь сильно напугали меня) that my heart is beating yet (что мое сердце до сих пор колотится)."

The Tin Woodman began to use his axe at once, and, just as the two Kalidahs were nearly across, the tree fell with a crash into the gulf, carrying the ugly, snarling brutes with it, and both were dashed to pieces on the sharp rocks at the bottom.
"Well," said the Cowardly Lion, drawing a long breath of relief, "I see we are going to live a little while longer, and I am glad of it, for it must be a very uncomfortable thing not to be alive. Those creatures frightened me so badly that my heart is beating yet."
"Ah," said the Tin Woodman sadly (сказал Железный Дровосек печально), "I wish I had a heart to beat (как бы мне хотелось иметь бьющееся сердце: «сердце, чтобы оно билось»)." This adventure made the travelers more anxious than ever to get out of the forest (это приключение заставило /наших/ путешественников захотеть, более чем когда-либо, выбраться из этого леса), and they walked so fast that Dorothy became tired (они шли так быстро, что Дороти устала: «стала уставшей»), and had to ride on the Lion's back (и ей пришлось ехать верхом на спине Льва). To their great joy the trees became thinner the farther they advanced (к их большой радости деревья становились все реже, чем дальше они шли; thin — тонкий; редкий; to advance — продвигаться, идти вперед), and in the afternoon they suddenly came upon a broad river (и днем они внезапно вышли к широкой реке; afternoon — время после полудня), flowing swiftly just before them (которая быстро текла прямо перед ними). On the other side of the water they could see the road of yellow brick running through a beautiful country (на другой стороне реки они увидели дорогу из желтого кирпича, убегающую через прекрасную страну; water — вода; водоем /река, озеро, море, бассейн и т.д./; to run — бежать, бегать; простираться, расстилаться, тянуться), with green meadows dotted with bright flowers (с зелеными лугами, усеянными яркими цветами; dot — точка; пятнышко; to dot — ставить точки; усеивать, испещрять) and all the road bordered with trees hanging full of delicious fruits (и вдоль дороги росли деревья, увешанные восхитительными фруктами; border — граница; край, кромка; to border — граничить; обрамлять, окаймлять). They were greatly pleased to see this delightful country before them (они были очень рады видеть эту очаровательную страну перед собой).
