Для этого существовал оправленный металлом деревянный щит. Стандартным оружием ближнего боя было копье и одноручный обоюдоострый длинный меч (около двух футов [61 см]). Эти тяжелые, отлично сбалансированные клинки были полезнее как дубинки, чем как колюще-режущее оружие. Рыцари и пехотинцы также часто использовали длинные луки — около шести футов (183 см) длиной. Они могли посылать стрелы на расстояние до 300 ярдов (274 м). Некоторые использовали примитивные арбалеты.
