They looked at Dorothy and her strangely assorted company with wondering eyes (они взирали на Дороти и ее странную разношерстную компанию изумленными глазами; to assort — сортировать, подбирать; гармонировать, подходить; assorted — сортированный; неоднородный; подходящий), and the children all ran away and hid behind their mothers when they saw the Lion (и все дети убегали и прятались за своими матерями, когда они видели Льва; to run; to hide); but no one spoke to them (но никто не заговорил с ними).

There were many people — men, women, and children — walking about, and these were all dressed in green clothes and had greenish skins.
They looked at Dorothy and her strangely assorted company with wondering eyes, and the children all ran away and hid behind their mothers when they saw the Lion; but no one spoke to them.
Many shops stood in the street (много магазинов стояло = было на улице), and Dorothy saw that everything in them was green (и Дороти увидела, что все в них было зеленого цвета). Green candy and green pop corn were offered for sale (зеленые леденцы и зеленый попкорн /воздушная кукуруза/ предлагались для продажи), as well as green shoes (равно как и зеленые туфли), green hats (зеленые шляпы), and green clothes of all sorts (и зеленая одежда всех видов). At one place a man was selling green lemonade (в одном месте какой-то мужчина продавал зеленый лимонад), and when the children bought it (а когда дети покупали его) Dorothy could see that they paid for it with green pennies (Дороти видела, как он платили за него зелеными пенни; pennies — пенни, пенсы /отдельные монеты/; pence — пенсы /когда речь идет о сумме/).
There seemed to be no horses nor animals of any kind (казалось, что /в городе/ не было ни лошадей, ни животных какого-либо вида = не было никаких…); the men carried things around in little green carts (и люди перевозили вещи в маленьких зеленых тачках; cart — телега, повозка; ручная тележка, тачка), which they pushed before them (которые они толкали перед собой). Many shops stood in the street, and Dorothy saw that everything in them was green. The Guardian of the Gates led them through the streets (Страж Ворот вел их через улицы = по улицам) until they came to a big building (пока они не пришли к большому зданию), exactly in the middle of the City (/расположенному/ точно в центре Города; middle — середина; центральная часть чего-либо), which was the Palace of Oz, the Great Wizard (и это был Дворец Оза, Великого Волшебника). There was a soldier before the door (перед дверью /стоял/ солдат), dressed in a green uniform and wearing a long green beard (одетый в зеленую униформу и с длинной зеленой бородой: «носящий длинную зеленую бороду»).
"Here are strangers (вот чужеземцы; stranger — незнакомец; чужестранец)," said the Guardian of the Gates to him (сказал ему Страж Ворот), "and they demand to see the Great Oz (они просятся увидеть Великого Оза)."
"Step inside (ступайте внутрь)," answered the soldier, "and I will carry your message to him (а я передам ему вашу просьбу: «отнесу ваше сообщение к нему»; to carry — нести, носить; передавать /сообщение/; message — сообщение, донесение, послание)."

The Guardian of the Gates led them through the streets until they came to a big building, exactly in the middle of the City, which was the Palace of Oz, the Great Wizard. There was a soldier before the door, dressed in a green uniform and wearing a long green beard.
"Here are strangers," said the Guardian of the Gates to him, "and they demand to see the Great Oz."
"Step inside," answered the soldier, "and I will carry your message to him."
So they passed through the Palace Gates (итак, они прошли через Ворота Дворца) and were led into a big room with a green carpet and lovely green furniture set with emeralds (и их проводили в большую залу с зеленым ковром и прелестной зеленой мебелью, украшенной изумрудами; to lead — вести; to set — сажать, усаживать; вставлять в раму или оправу, оправлять /драгоценные камни/). When, at last, he came back, Dorothy asked (когда он наконец вернулся, Дороти спросила): "Have you seen Oz (вы видели Оза)?"

So they passed through the Palace Gates and were led into a big room with a green carpet and lovely green furniture set with emeralds. The soldier made them all wipe their feet upon a green mat before entering this room, and when they were seated he said politely: "Please make yourselves comfortable while I go to the door of the Throne Room and tell Oz you are here." They had to wait a long time before the soldier returned.
When, at last, he came back, Dorothy asked: "Have you seen Oz?"
"Oh, no," returned the soldier; "I have never seen him (я его никогда = ни разу не видел). But I spoke to him as he sat behind his screen (но я говорил с ним, в то время как он сидел за своей ширмой) and gave him your message (и передал ему ваше сообщение). Therefore, as you must remain in the Palace for several days (поэтому, раз вам придется остаться во Дворце на несколько дней), I will have you shown to rooms (я отведу вас в комнаты) where you may rest in comfort after your journey (где вы сможете уютно отдохнуть после своего путешествия; comfort — утешение, успокоение; комфорт, уют, благополучие)."

Therefore, as you must remain in the Palace for several days, I will have you shown to rooms where you may rest in comfort after your journey."
"Thank you," replied the girl; "that is very kind of Oz (это очень мило /с его = Оза стороны/)."
The soldier now blew upon a green whistle (тогда солдат дунул в зеленый свисток; to blow), and at once a young girl, dressed in a pretty green silk gown, entered the room (и тут же в зал вошла юная девушка, одетая в красивое зеленое шелковое платье). She had lovely green hair and green eyes (у нее были прекрасные зеленые волосы и зеленые глаза), and she bowed low before Dorothy as she said (она низко поклонилась Дороти и сказала), "Follow me and I will show you your room (следуй за мной, и я покажу тебе твою комнату)."
So Dorothy said good-bye to all her friends except Toto (тогда Дороти попрощалась со всеми своими друзьями, за исключением Тото; good-bye — прощание; to say good-bye — прощаться), and taking the dog in her arms followed the green girl (и, взяв песика на руки, последовала за зеленой девушкой) through seven passages and up three flights of stairs (по семи коридорам и вверх на три лестничных пролета; passage — прохождение, проход; коридор) until they came to a room at the front of the Palace (пока они не пришли в комнату, /расположенную/ в передней части Дворца; front — перед, передняя сторона; фасад, лицевая сторона).

"Thank you," replied the girl; "that is very kind of Oz." The soldier now blew upon a green whistle, and at once a young girl, dressed in a pretty green silk gown, entered the room. She had lovely green hair and green eyes, and she bowed low before Dorothy as she said, "Follow me and I will show you your room." So Dorothy said good-bye to all her friends except Toto, and taking the dog in her arms followed the green girl through seven passages and up three flights of stairs until they came to a room at the front of the Palace.
It was the sweetest little room in the world (это была милейшая маленькая комната в мире), with a soft comfortable bed (с мягкой удобной кроватью) that had sheets of green silk (на которой /лежали/ простыни из зеленого шелка) and a green velvet counterpane (и зеленое бархатное стеганое одеяло; counterpane — стеганое покрывало /на кровати/). There was a tiny fountain in the middle of the room (посередине комнаты находился крошечный фонтан), that shot a spray of green perfume into the air (который распылял брызги зеленых духов в воздух; to shoot — стрелять, вести огонь; выбрасывать, извергать /пламя, дым и т. п./; spray — водяная пыль, мелкие брызги; perfume — благоухание, аромат; духи), to fall back into a beautifully carved green marble basin (и они падали обратно, в зеленый мраморный бассейн с красивой резьбой; to carve — вырезать, высекать; basin — миска, таз; водоем, резервуар, бассейн).
Beautiful green flowers stood in the windows (на окнах стояли прекрасные зеленые цветы), and there was a shelf with a row of little green books (и была еще полка, с рядом = на которой стоял ряд маленьких зеленых книг). When Dorothy had time to open these books (когда у Дороти было время, чтобы открыть эти книги) she found them full of queer green pictures (она обнаружила, что они были полны = пестрели странными зелеными картинками) that made her laugh, they were so funny (которые заставили ее смеяться = рассмешили ее, такие смешные они были).
