"But how about the voice?" she inquired.
"Oh, I am a ventriloquist," said the little man. "I can throw the sound of my voice wherever I wish, so that you thought it was coming out of the Head. Here are the other things I used to deceive you." He showed the Scarecrow the dress and the mask he had worn when he seemed to be the lovely Lady. And the Tin Woodman saw that his terrible Beast was nothing but a lot of skins, sewn together, with slats to keep their sides out. As for the Ball of Fire, the false Wizard had hung that also from the ceiling. It was really a ball of cotton, but when oil was poured upon it the ball burned fiercely.
"Really (действительно)," said the Scarecrow, "you ought to be ashamed of yourself for being such a humbug (тебе должно было быть стыдно за себя, из-за того, что ты такой обманщик)."
"I am — I certainly am (я, конечно, стыжусь)," answered the little man sorrowfully (печально ответил невысокий старичок); "but it was the only thing I could do (но это было единственным, что я мог сделать). Sit down, please, there are plenty of chairs (садитесь, пожалуйста, здесь достаточно стульев); and I will tell you my story (и я расскажу вам свою историю)."
So they sat down and listened while he told the following tale (итак они /все/ сели, и стали слушать, пока он рассказывал следующую историю).
"I was born in Omaha (я родился в Омахе)—»
"Why, that isn't very far from Kansas (ба, да это совсем недалеко от Канзаса)!" cried Dorothy.
"No, but it's farther from here (да, но гораздо дальше, чем отсюда)," he said, shaking his head at her sadly (сказал он, печально качая ей головой). "When I grew up I became a ventriloquist (когда я вырос, я стал чревовещателем), and at that I was very well trained by a great master (и в этом я был очень хорошо подготовлен одним великим мастером; to train — тренировать, готовить, обучать; master — хозяин, владелец; специалист, знаток своего дела). Here he mewed so like a kitten (здесь он мяукнул, совсем как котенок) that Toto pricked up his ears and looked everywhere to see where she was (так что Тото навострил свои уши и стал смотреть везде, чтобы увидеть, где же он /котенок/ был; to prick up ears — навострить уши, насторожиться).

"Really," said the Scarecrow, "you ought to be ashamed of yourself for being such a humbug."
"I am — I certainly am," answered the little man sorrowfully; "but it was the only thing I could do. Sit down, please, there are plenty of chairs; and I will tell you my story." So they sat down and listened while he told the following tale.

"Why, that isn't very far from Kansas!" cried Dorothy.
"No, but it's farther from here," he said, shaking his head at her sadly. "When I grew up I became a ventriloquist, and at that I was very well trained by a great master. I can imitate any kind of a bird or beast." Here he mewed so like a kitten that Toto pricked up his ears and looked everywhere to see where she was.
"After a time (спустя некоторое время)," continued Oz (продолжил Оз), "I tired of that, and became a balloonist (я устал от этого и стал воздухоплавателем; balloon — воздушный шар, неуправляемый аэростат; balloonist — аэронавт, воздухоплаватель)."
"What is that (а кто это)?" asked Dorothy.

"Oh," she said, "I know (я поняла)."
"Well, one day I went up in a balloon and the ropes got twisted (итак, однажды я поднялся в воздух на воздушном шаре, а веревки спутались; twisted — сплетенный, переплетенный; запутанный, спутанный), so that I couldn't come down again (поэтому я не смог спуститься обратно). It went way up above the clouds, so far that a current of air struck it (шар поднялся вверх, над облаками, так высоко, что поток воздуха подхватил его: «ударил по нему») and carried it many, many miles away (и отнес его на много, много миль). For a day and a night I traveled through the air (день и ночь = целые сутки я путешествовал по воздуху), and on the morning of the second day I awoke (и на утро второго дня я проснулся; to awake) and found the balloon floating over a strange and beautiful country (и обнаружил, что воздушный шар парит над незнакомой и прекрасной страной; to float — плавать, всплывать; плыть в воздухе /об облаках и т. п./, парить; strange — чужой; чуждый; незнакомый, неизвестный).

"After a time," continued Oz, "I tired of that, and became a balloonist."
"What is that?" asked Dorothy.

"Just to amuse myself (только чтобы развлечься), and keep the good people busy (и занять всех этих добрых людей), I ordered them to build this City, and my Palace (я приказал им построить этот Город и мой Дворец); and they did it all willingly and well (и они сделали это, с совешенной/полной готовностью; willingly — охотно, с готовностью; well — хорошо; охотно, действительно, без труда, с готовностью). Then I thought, as the country was so green and beautiful (тогда я подумал, что раз страна была такой зеленой и прекрасной), I would call it the Emerald City (то я назову его Изумрудным Городом); and to make the name fit better (и, чтобы имя еще лучше подходило /ему/) I put green spectacles on all the people (я надел зеленые очки на всех жителей), so that everything they saw was green (так что все, что они видели, было зеленым)."

"It came down gradually, and I was not hurt a bit. But I found myself in the midst of a strange people, who, seeing me come from the clouds, thought I was a great Wizard. Of course I let them think so, because they were afraid of me, and promised to do anything I wished them to.
"Just to amuse myself, and keep the good people busy, I ordered them to build this City, and my Palace; and they did it all willingly and well. Then I thought, as the country was so green and beautiful, I would call it the Emerald City; and to make the name fit better I put green spectacles on all the people, so that everything they saw was green."
"But isn't everything here green (а разве все не зеленое)?" asked Dorothy.
"No more than in any other city (не больше, чем в любом другом городе)," replied Oz; "but when you wear green spectacles (но, когда ты носишь зеленые очки), why of course everything you see looks green to you (тогда конечно же все, что ты видишь, выглядит для тебя зеленым). But my people have worn green glasses on their eyes so long that most of them think it really is an Emerald City, and it certainly is a beautiful place, abounding in jewels and precious metals, and has every good thing that is needed to make one happy. I have been good to the people, and they like me; but ever since this Palace was built, I have shut myself up and would not see any of them.
"One of my greatest fears was the Witches (одним из самых больших моих опасений/страхов были Ведьмы), for while I had no magical powers at all (ведь тогда как у меня совсем не было волшебных сил) I soon found out (я вскоре обнаружил; to find out) that the Witches were really able to do wonderful things (что Ведьмы были действительно способны творить удивительные вещи). There were four of them in this country (в этой стране их было четыре), and they ruled the people who live in the North and South and East and West (и они правили людьми, которые жили на Севере, Юге, Востоке и Западе). Fortunately, the Witches of the North and South were good (к счастью, Ведьмы Севера и Юга оказались добрыми), and I knew they would do me no harm (и я знал, что они не причинят мне никакого вреда); but the Witches of the East and West were terribly wicked (но Ведьмы Востока и Запада бы ужасно злыми), and had they not thought I was more powerful than they themselves (и, если бы они не думали, что я был более могуществен, чем они сами), they would surely have destroyed me (то они наверняка уничтожили бы меня). As it was (и вот так), I lived in deadly fear of them for many years (я жил в смертельном страхе пред ними много лет); so you can imagine how pleased I was (поэтому вы можете себе представить, как я обрадовался: «каким обрадованным я был») when I heard your house had fallen on the Wicked Witch of the East (когда я услышал, что твой дом упал на Злую Ведьму Востока).
When you came to me, I was willing to promise anything (когда ты пришла ко мне, я был готов пообещать /тебе/ все что угодно) if you would only do away with the other Witch (если бы ты только покончила и с другой Ведьмой; to do away with — избавиться, отделяться от кого-либо/чего-либо, покончить с кем-либо/чем-либо,); but, now that you have melted her (но теперь, когда ты растопила ее), I am ashamed to say that I cannot keep my promises (мне стыдно сказать, что я не могу сдержать свои обещания)."
