"The princess was angry, and she knew, of course, who did it.
She had all the Winged Monkeys brought before her, and she said at first that their wings should be tied and they should be treated as they had treated Quelala, and dropped in the river. But my grandfather pleaded hard, for he knew the Monkeys would drown in the river with their wings tied, and Quelala said a kind word for them also; so that Gayelette finally spared them, on condition that the Winged Monkeys should ever after do three times the bidding of the owner of the Golden Cap.
This Cap had been made for a wedding present to Quelala (эта Шапка была изготовлена в качестве свадебного подарка /для/ Келала), and it is said to have cost the princess half her kingdom (и говорят, что она стоила принцессе половину ее королевства; cost — цена, стоимость; to cost — стоить). Of course my grandfather and all the other Monkeys at once agreed to the condition (конечно же, мой дед и все остальные Обезьяны сразу же согласились на это условие), and that is how it happens that we are three times the slaves of the owner of the Golden Cap (и вот почему происходит так, что мы три раза являемся рабами владельца Золотой Шапки), whosoever he may be (кто бы это ни был)."
"And what became of them (а что стало с ними)?" asked Dorothy, who had been greatly interested in the story (спросила Дороти, которая очень заинтересовалась этой историей).

"And what became of them?" asked Dorothy, who had been greatly interested in the story.
"Quelala being the first owner of the Golden Cap (Келала, будучи первым владельцем Золотой Шапки)," replied the Monkey, "he was the first to lay his wishes upon us (был первым, кто поведал нам: «возложил на нас» свои желания; to lay — класть, положить; возлагать /надежды и т. п./). As his bride could not bear the sight of us (а так как его невеста не могла выносить нашего вида), he called us all to him in the forest after he had married her (он позвал нас всех к себе в лес, после того, как он женился на ней) and ordered us always to keep where she could never again set eyes on a Winged Monkey (и приказал нам всегда оставаться там, где она никогда /снова/ не смогла бы увидеть ни одной Крылатой Обезьяны; eye — глаз; взгляд, взор; to set eyes on smth. — увидеть что-либо), which we were glad to do (что мы все были рады исполнить), for we were all afraid of her (ибо мы все ее боялись).
"This was all we ever had to do (вот и все, что нам когда-либо пришлось исполнить) until the Golden Cap fell into the hands of the Wicked Witch of the West (до того, как Золотая Шапка попала в руки Злой Ведьмы Запада), who made us enslave the Winkies (которая заставила нас поработить Винки; slave — невольник, раб; to enslave — порабощать, покорять, подчинять), and afterward drive Oz himself out of the Land of the West (и потом прогнать самого Оза из Страны Запада). Now the Golden Cap is yours (теперь Золотая Шапка твоя), and three times you have the right to lay your wishes upon us (и три раза у тебя есть право загадывать нам свои желания)."
As the Monkey King finished his story (когда Король Обезьян закончил /рассказывать/ свою историю) Dorothy looked down and saw the green, shining walls of the Emerald City before them (Дороти посмотрела вниз и увидела, что перед ними /стоят/ зеленые сияющие стены Изумрудного Города).

"Quelala being the first owner of the Golden Cap," replied the Monkey, "he was the first to lay his wishes upon us. As his bride could not bear the sight of us, he called us all to him in the forest after he had married her and ordered us always to keep where she could never again set eyes on a Winged Monkey, which we were glad to do, for we were all afraid of her.
"This was all we ever had to do until the Golden Cap fell into the hands of the Wicked Witch of the West, who made us enslave the Winkies, and afterward drive Oz himself out of the Land of the West. Now the Golden Cap is yours, and three times you have the right to lay your wishes upon us." As the Monkey King finished his story Dorothy looked down and saw the green, shining walls of the Emerald City before them.
She wondered at the rapid flight of the Monkeys (она подивилась стремительному полету Обезьян), but was glad the journey was over (но была рада, что путешествие закончилось; to be over — заканчиваться). The strange creatures set the travelers down carefully before the gate of the City (странные существа осторожно опустили путешественников перед воротами Города), the King bowed low to Dorothy (Король низко поклонился Дороти), and then flew swiftly away, followed by all his band (и затем быстро улетел, сопровождаемый всей своей стаей).
"That was a good ride (хорошая была прогулка; ride — прогулка, поездка, езда /верхом/)," said the little girl.
"Yes, and a quick way out of our troubles (да, и быстрое решение наших проблем; way out — выход из положения)," replied the Lion.
"How lucky it was you brought away that wonderful Cap (как удачно, что ты взяла с собой эту удивительную Шапку)!"

She wondered at the rapid flight of the Monkeys, but was glad the journey was over. The strange creatures set the travelers down carefully before the gate of the City, the King bowed low to Dorothy, and then flew swiftly away, followed by all his band.
"That was a good ride," said the little girl.
"Yes, and a quick way out of our troubles," replied the Lion.
"How lucky it was you brought away that wonderful Cap!"
15. The Discovery of Oz, the Terrible (Разоблачение Оза, Грозного; discovery — открытие; раскрытие, разоблачение)
The four travelers walked up to the great gate of Emerald City (четверо путешественников подошли к большим воротам Изумрудного Города) and rang the bell (и позвонили в звонок; to ring). After ringing several times (после того, /как они/ позвонили несколько раз), it was opened by the same Guardian of the Gates (они = ворота были открыты тем же самым Стражем Ворот) they had met before (которого они встречали ранее; to meet).
"What! are you back again (как, вы вернулись)?" he asked, in surprise (удивленно спросил он; surprise — удивление).
"Do you not see us (разве ты не видишь нас)?" answered the Scarecrow.
"But I thought you had gone to visit the Wicked Witch of the West (но я думал, что вы ушли навестить Злую Ведьму Запада)."
"We did visit her (а мы ее и навестили)," said the Scarecrow.
"And she let you go again (и она позволила вам уйти)?" asked the man, in wonder (изумленно спросил мужчина; wonder — удивление, изумление).
"She could not help it (она не могла этому помешать; cannot help smth. — быть не в состоянии воспрепятствовать, помешать чему-либо), for she is melted (потому что она растаяла)," explained the Scarecrow (объяснил Страшила).
"Melted (растаяла)! Well, that is good news, indeed (это, в самом деле, хорошая новость)," said the man.
"Who melted her (а кто же ее растопил)?"
"It was Dorothy (/это была/ Дороти)," said the Lion gravely (серьезно сказал Лев).
"Good gracious (Боже милосердный)!" exclaimed the man (воскликнул мужчина), and he bowed very low indeed before her (и он поклонился ей действительно очень низко).

The four travelers walked up to the great gate of Emerald City and rang the bell. After ringing several times, it was opened by the same Guardian of the Gates they had met before.
"What! are you back again?" he asked, in surprise.
"Do you not see us?" answered the Scarecrow.
"But I thought you had gone to visit the Wicked Witch of the West."
"We did visit her," said the Scarecrow.
"And she let you go again?" asked the man, in wonder.
"She could not help it, for she is melted," explained the Scarecrow.
"Melted! Well, that is good news, indeed," said the man.
"Who melted her?"
"It was Dorothy," said the Lion gravely.
"Good gracious!" exclaimed the man, and he bowed very low indeed before her.
Then he led them into his little room (затем он провел их в свою маленькую комнату; to lead) and locked the spectacles from the great box on all their eyes (и закрыл на ключ очки из огромной коробки у них на затылках: «на всех их глазах»), just as he had done before (точно так же, как он это делал раньше).
Afterward they passed on through the gate into the Emerald City (после этого они прошли через ворота в Изумрудный Город).
When the people heard from the Guardian of the Gates (когда люди услышали от Стража Ворот) that Dorothy had melted the Wicked Witch of the West (что Дороти растопила Злую Ведьму Запада), they all gathered around the travelers (они все собрались вокруг путешественников) and followed them in a great crowd to the Palace of Oz (и последовали за ними большой толпой к Дворцу Оза).

Then he led them into his little room and locked the spectacles from the great box on all their eyes, just as he had done before.
Afterward they passed on through the gate into the Emerald City.
When the people heard from the Guardian of the Gates that Dorothy had melted the Wicked Witch of the West, they all gathered around the travelers and followed them in a great crowd to the Palace of Oz.
The soldier with the green whiskers was still on guard before the door (солдат с зеленой бородой: «с зелеными бакенбардами» все еще нес караул перед дверью; guard — охрана, защита; караул, стража; to be on guard — быть в карауле), but he let them in at once (но он сразу же их впустил), and they were again met by the beautiful green girl (и их снова встретила красивая зеленая девушка), who showed each of them to their old rooms at once (которая сразу же провела каждого из них в их старые комнаты), so they might rest until the Great Oz was ready to receive them (чтобы они могли отдохнуть, пока Великий Оз не будет готов принять их; to receive — получать; принимать /гостей, посетителей/).

The soldier had the news carried straight to Oz that Dorothy and the other travelers had come back again, after destroying the Wicked Witch; but Oz made no reply.
They thought the Great Wizard would send for them at once, but he did not (они думали, что Великий Волшебник тут же пошлет за ними, но он /этого/ не сделал). They had no word from him the next day, nor the next, nor the next (не получили они известий от него ни на следующий день, ни на /после/ следующий, ни на /после-после/ следующий; word — слово; вести, известие, сообщение). The waiting was tiresome and wearing (ожидание было утомительным и изматывающим; wearing — утомительный; неинтересный; to wear — носить; изнашивать; изнурять), and at last they grew vexed that Oz should treat them in so poor a fashion (и, наконец, они рассердились на то, что Оз обращается с ними столь недостойным образом; to vex — досаждать, раздражать, сердить; to be vexed with smb. — рассердиться на кого-либо; poor — бедный, малоимущий; дурной, неблагородный), after sending them to undergo hardships and slavery (после того, как послал их сносить трудности и рабство; to undergo — испытывать, переносить; подвергаться). So the Scarecrow at last asked the green girl to take another message to Oz (так что наконец Страшила попросил зеленую девушку отнести еще одно сообщение Озу), saying if he did not let them in to see him at once (сказав, что если он немедленно не впустит их, чтобы /они могли/ встретиться с ним) they would call the Winged Monkeys to help them (они позовут Крылатых Обезьян к себе на помощь), and find out whether he kept his promises or not (и выяснят, держит ли он свои обещания или нет; to keep держать, не отдавать; сдержать /слово, обещание/).
